the great big precure primer post
Jan. 1st, 2022 11:23 amposted also on tongle where you can rebagel it, but it’s also going here so that i can keep it updated as new series come out.
HEY YOU!!! yeah, you!!!
are you looking for some cheerful anime with a nice long episode count to binge watch in your downtime?
do you like the magical girl genre, but dark/edgy magical girl stuff aimed at adults doesn’t really do it for you?
do you specifically like kids’ cartoons, or are you looking for an anime series you can watch with kids in your life who are old enough to read subtitles but too young for blood and jiggle physics?
were you a big fan of the 90s sailor moon anime, but then tried getting into the manga or the manga-loyal anniversary adaptations only to realize that what you really liked about the 90s anime was all the character-centric filler?
if you’ve answered yes to multiple of the above queries, then maybe the PRECURE franchise is the right choice for you!
precure is a long-running, monster-of-the-week-style magical girl franchise aimed at elementary school girls, animated by toei. its major distinguishing feature among other magical girl shows is that it features MARTIAL ARTS COMBAT between the magical girls and the bad guys!
precure has been airing for 20+ years now - ETA (early ‘24) its 21st series has just begun - but the nice thing about it is that almost* every precure series (e.g. one-year, 45-50 episode run) is a standalone, meaning there’s no continuity between seasons and you can watch whichever ones sound appealing to you in whatever order you want to.
*two of the early precure series, futari wa precure and yes precure 5, have direct sequels that ran the year after them and are essentially two-year-long series.
so to help those interested choose what’s right for them… here’s a menu of all the seasons of precure so far, introducing them by title, year of broadcast, episode count, basic premise, and a little background about their production!
( this is a golden ages of tumblr style powerpoint so this post be image heavy )
